Hans Humpty (ハンス・ハンプティ 'Hansu Hanputi'?) Among them, he's the only hero whose name is not well known, and for a good reason - he's an outstanding killer for hire and is one of the Six Braves. A strange assassin man who mimics a cat as he talks, as well as their movement. He fences with an unworldly and peculiar skill. He is the only one who believes that the Seventh is unaware of his own status, and suspects that Adlet is the Seventh. He is the first to find out that Adlet is not the Seventh (via using his assassin techniques) and does everything in his power to prove his innocence.

Appearance[]

4-11

Hans is a man[1] with long disheveled hair that covers his eyes. His clothes are simple and patched-up. His appearance is also reminiscent of that of a cat, with his cat-like broad smile as well as his movements and actions. He also has a tail. His speech pattern in Japanese is very distinctive, being a mix of Tohoku dialect and cat speech. His speech pattern was also inspired by cats, as he based his fighting style on the way cat moves, he does it out of respect. Plus, he is actually quite masculine, despite how skinny he looks under his clothes.

Personality[]

Hans is a strange man[1] who mimics a cat as he talks incorporating their movement into both his fighting style and regular mannerisms,[2] he also possesses an odd trait to scratch his head hard when noticing something or in deep thought. Hans has a morbid sense of humour: case in point when he and Adlet were first investigating being trapped in the Illusion Fog Hans picked up one of the decapitated heads of one of the dead Kyouma and did a brief moment of ventriloquism towards Adlet while blood gushed onto his person. Hans can also be flirty to some extent making note of the beautiful women who he would be fighting alongside as a Brave, and telling Adlet that he was "not into looking at naked men". Belying his eccentric nature Hans is one of the smarter heroes as well as one of the stronger ones, making for a deadly combination. Because of his keen mind, Hans is difficult to deceive often picking up on points that may overs overlook taking note of contradictions. While trapped in the Illusion Fog Barrier Hans noted the impossibility of the barrier being activated before Adlet entered as he had tripped the security guards, and when Mora supplied them with suspicious information that not even Adlet had picked up on Hans was the one who arguably saved Adlet's life (although it is likely that he would've been revived by Rolonia as Hans was). However, Hans is humble and knows when he has made a misjudgment or acted too rashly apologizing and making amends with Adlet after he had helped turn the rest of the Braves against him.

Hans has his own thoughts on who the Seventh was that the others did not, in the Third Volume when pressed he said that he suspected Chamot and Adlet because they would be the most dangerous if the seventh, and also secretly suspected that the Seventh did not know that they were the seventh themselves which was precisely the case.

Hans has shown very clear hedonistic traits that could in part be an act to cover up a clearly cautious side and even sympathetic side. Hans may enjoy battle (or killing strong enemies) to an extent, and at times he will not hesitate to attack suspicious allies as well yet when the situation requires more prominent results he can reel it in and interrogate them for answers. According to Tgurneu Hans is the one of more feared Brave, second only to Chamot.

Hans does not hold grudges but does seem to take any chance to try and get compensated for any action against him or that is expected of him with a business-like negotiation as when Mora had temporarily murdered him he used it to exploit some extra money from her and when he demanded payment from a king in order to kill the Majin, the latter apparently stemming from a strict rule to not kill unless there is money to be earned. Though Hans's actions speak of someone who prioritizes money over life Hans is quite loyal to the Braves and defeating the Majin, either because he is paid to do so or because he was going to even if he was never paid in the first place as he does not want to die along with the rest of humanity.

History[]

Hans is the only Brave whose name is not well known because he is an assassin, the same can be said of his previous history, since he only reveals events or knowledge after he became an assassin and nothing before. As he said himself, being famous would hinder his work. He has apparently done work in Piena frequently enough. He never works for free, so after he received the Crest of Six Flowers he asked the king of the nearest kingdom for a reward of money before he headed to the heroes' gathering point.

Illusion Fog Barrier Arc[]

During this arc, Hans is initially with Mora and meets the other Braves last. And in determining who was the Seventh Brave, he was able to at least draw Adlet's suspicion. Initially, Hans claimed that Fremy was the Seventh Brave, but upon running through each Brave's last events, decided that it couldn't have been her - she had way too many opportunities to kill Adlet before arriving at the temple, and yet she didn't. This made Fremy the first Brave to be exonerated from the investigation, but Adlet the next to be suspected in Hans' eyes.

Abilities[]

Feline Move-Set[]

Hans fences with an unworldly and peculiar skill[3] often taking up posses in a feline-like manner which makes his move-set hard to predict and Mora compares his combat prowess to the likes of Tgurneu and Dozzu when the latter faced off with Hans implying great skill far surpassing many a man and Kyouma alike. Tgurneu himself knows of Hans's abilities to be top-tier among the Braves second only to Chamot who herself is said to be the strongest saint and was noticed by Mora to be stronger than her despite the magical abilities she possessed, including enhanced strength. He is extremely capable in melee combat, holding his own against fellow Braves Adlet Mayer and Mora Chester in one-on-one combat for a significant period of time (Adlet was trying to not kill him while Mora was trying to kill him in a specific way). Together with Adlet, Hans was able to defeat Chamot something that had not been done prior to this in her life. More impressive still Hans was capable of holding back Dozzu despite Fremy previously stating that they would not be able to defeat the Commanders one on one despite Hans being tired from having to face back a horde of Kyouma previously to protect Chamot.

Expert Blade Wielder[]

In battle, he wields two wide blade knives and moves around in an inhuman and completely unpredictable manner that by his own claims is based on the movement of a cat; sometimes rotating mid-air, sometimes temporarily walking on his fists, displaying at all times the flexibility of a cat, his agility is the most prominent point of his style and with it he dodged Dozzu's lightning and inflicted many a wound despite the commander's tiny build. He's fast, silent, and deadly in all situations. When he was briefly blinded demonstrated great tracking ability able to keep track of Adlet's relative position for a time until the teargas wore off from the sounds that he made while running alone. However arguably Hans's greatest asset is his intelligence, his deductive abilities on par or even surpassing Adlet's own and it was he who first finally deduced the identity of the Seventh in the sixth volume.

When Adlet was suspected, Hans revealed his in-depth knowledge of the Saint of Seals and Saint of Salt's power, having had to sneak past or force through many difficult barriers.

Relationships[]

Adlet Maier[]

The Brave that Hans is arguably the closest to however is Adlet Maier, while at first Hans saw a flaw in Adlet story, and exploited it. Adlet was able to reach out to Hans, and prove that he was not the one who activated the barrier, and the two then hit it off surprisingly well, working together to uncover the real culprit's plan and working together to defeat Chamot the two made a good team in both their wit and battle style made them a capable combination. Hans stood up for Adlet's innocence to Mora and later sent him to another location after he suspected Mora's treachery an act that could've saved the life of either Adlet (or Mora depending on the outcome of the battle) and even gave him backhanded advise on being the leader in the Third Volume. Though their relationship is mostly positive Rolonia's catching up to them after the Illusion Fog Barrier made them both once again suspicious of each other out of necessity and Hans suspected Adlet because of his potential danger as a bogus.

Flamie[]

Mora[]

Mora, on the other hand, has a more passive-tenuous relationship with Hans, both wary of him and exasperated by his eccentrics, but also respect him as a powerful warrior and ally. When Mora killed Hans, and he was brought back to life she was ready to die in atonement, but Hans wanted money instead, and she was happy to let her crimes go with such a minor compensation.

Chamo[]

Surprisingly, Chamot and Hans developed a mutual affection for each other after a while. Chamot usually calls him "Neko-san" (Mr. Cat).

Rolonia[]

Rolonia, on the other hand, is rather frightened of Hans because of his profession and the fact that he was clearly suspicious of her from first meeting her, like as he was as exasperated by the new Brave as the others. However, Rolonia later healed him and brought him back to life.

Goldof[]

Goldof's deep depression after Nachetania's reveal as the seventh caused him to not pay much heed and statements Hans made that would've once riled up Goldof did nothing, but before this Goldof made a dislike towards the assassin clear because of his casualty towards people as high-ranking as his country's princess.

Trivia[]

  • Compared to the Humpty Dumpty poem, Hans takes a great fall after fighting Mora, however, Rolonia brings him back to life.
